Function of oil cooler

When the engine is running, as the temperature increases, the oil viscosity becomes thinner, reducing the lubrication ability. Therefore, some engines are equipped with oil coolers, whose role is to reduce the temperature of the oil, so that the lubricating oil to maintain a certain viscosity. The oil cooler is arranged in the circulating oil circuit of the lubrication system.
Type of cooler
1) Water-cooled oil cooler
The oil cooler is placed in the cooling water channel, and the temperature of the lubricating oil is controlled by the temperature of the cooling water. When the lubricating oil temperature is high, cool it with cooling water. When the engine starts, it absorbs heat from the cooling water, rapidly raising the temperature of the lubricating oil. The oil cooler is composed of aluminum alloy shell, front cover, back cover and copper core tube. To enhance cooling, a heat sink is placed on the outside of the tube. The cooling water flows outside the pipe, and the lubricating oil flows inside the pipe for heat exchange. There is also a structure in which oil flows outside the pipe and water flows inside the pipe.
2) Air-cooled oil cooler
The core of the air-cooled oil cooler is composed of a number of cooling tubes and cooling plates. When the car is moving, the hot oil cooler core is cooled by the oncoming wind from the car. Air cooled oil coolers require good ambient ventilation. Ordinary cars are difficult to ensure adequate ventilation space and are rarely used. This kind of cooler is mostly used in racing cars because of its fast speed and large cooling air volume.
How the oil cooler works
This is a liquid-liquid heat exchanger. The heat is oil and the coolant is water. Typically, the oil in this heat exchanger enters the tube and the water enters the shell. Countercurrent heat transfer is usually used, that is, the oil outlet and the water inlet are at the same end of the heat exchanger. Because the heat exchange between oil and water is very good, the total heat transfer coefficient should not be less than 1000 W/m2-K, so the design should be quite compact, and the oil can be cooled to the inlet water temperature plus a few degrees Celsius (e.g. 5 degrees). The actual cooling effect depends on the water/oil flow ratio. The greater the water flow, the better the cooling effect.
